Accessibility and Case: Why ALL CAPS Hurts Readability

WCAG doesn't forbid uppercase, but extensive research shows it slows reading speed and hurts comprehension. Worse, some screen readers interpret all-caps as acronyms and spell them out letter by letter.

Accessible alternatives

  • Use CSS text-transform: uppercase instead of typing in caps — screen readers see the original mixed case
  • Bold or size instead of caps for emphasis
  • Reserve caps for short labels (≤3 words) where needed for visual hierarchy
